Day 3 - The Recovery

Day 3 was a shorter and flatter day on paper, taking us from our campsite in Heathfield all the way to the coast, where we would catch the ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe. After the big efforts of the previous days and the relentless heat, Teresa woke up feeling a little low on energy, so we agreed from the start: today was about enjoying the journey and listening to the body.
And with temperatures soaring during what felt like one of the hottest days ever recorded in England, that was definitely the right decision.
We rolled onto the beautiful Cuckoo Trail, and honestly, it was one of the highlights of the trip so far. Long stretches of smooth paths surrounded by trees, peaceful countryside, and enough shade to make the heat just about manageable. The pace was easy, with plenty of breaks, plenty of snacks… and yes, loads and loads of water.
At one of the trail stops, we found a small outdoor maintenance/exercise course. Teresa immediately decided she had to try every single obstacle and exercise there. So much for “low energy”… 😅
We kept following the trail at a relaxed rhythm, stopping for a picnic lunch and simply enjoying the slower pace of the day. Sometimes these quieter stages become the most memorable ones. No pressure, no huge climbs, just riding together through beautiful scenery.

As we approached the coast, the excitement started building again. Reaching Newhaven felt like reaching a major milestone of the adventure. England behind us. France ahead.

Before boarding the ferry, we stopped at Newhaven beach for a quick refreshing swim in the sea. The cold water felt incredible after hours under the sun and gave us the perfect reset before the crossing.

At 5pm, we boarded the ferry to Dieppe. As the sun started setting over the water, we captured some truly beautiful moments on deck. Those sunset photos, standing together looking out at the sea, are memories we will keep forever.
We had dinner onboard, watched England slowly disappear into the distance, and finally set sail toward France.
That night, we arrived in Dieppe tired, salty, sunburnt, but happy. Three days completed. Paris getting closer. 🚴♀️❤️
